History and Structure

LEAF was initiated in 1999 by the Forest in Schools programme in Norway, Sweden and Finland. In cooperation with the Foundation for Environmental Education, the programme rolled out globally in the spring of 2000. Today, these three founders still play a role in the LEAF organisation, by being part of the International Steering Committee.  

The International LEAF Coordinator and FEE Head Office are responsible for the day-to-day management of the LEAF programme and its activities. FEE Head Office supports the development of the programme in new countries and supports existing countries by exchanging best practices and resources. The International Steering Committee is responsible for supporting and advising the International LEAF Coordinator.
